Donald Glover is gearing up to star as an undercover agent in a reboot of a mid-2000s Hollywood blockbuster that is set to premiere next year.
On Thursday (December 7), the first official trailer for Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith went live. Though the original was a film, its latest version will be chopped up into a series that will be released in installments beginning February 2, 2024.
Soundtracked by Shirley Bassey’s rendition of “(Where Do I Begin) Love Song,” the teaser features Glover and Maya Erskine in the title roles. Though not much about the plot has been revealed, it is clear from the preview that the duo will be posing as a married couple with false identities as they carry out high-stakes missions.
Check it out below:
The 2005 film is about a married couple — played by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie — who find out they’re rival assassins who have been tasked with bumping each other off. Joining the cast of the new production are Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Michaela Coel, John Turturro and Paul Dano in yet-to-be specified roles.
News of the remake first broke in early 2021. At the time, the cast looked much different as Emmy winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge was slated to star alongside Glover but later backed out. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Fleabag star allegedly exited the project due to differences in creative vision with her counterpart, but the pair remain close friends.
In the days that would follow, Glover made the move from FX to Amazon in a lucrative, multi-year deal worth eight-figures.
The agreement would highlight a content channel spotlighting his work and other curated content on Prime Video. His brother, who wrote and produced Atlanta with him, also signed a deal with the company.
Content that has since come from the deal includes Swarm, the story of a young woman named Dre who is obsessed with a fictional pop star. The show explores her fandom as well as the dark and disturbing lengths to which she goes to meet her idol.
