Denis Villeneuve explains why he is not interested in directing a Star Wars movie. The Dune filmmaker revealed that he lost his passion for the franchise a long time ago. In a recent podcast interview, Villeneuve expressed his disappointment with the Star Wars series, particularly after the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983. He reminisced about his childhood love for the franchise, especially The Empire Strikes Back, but felt let down by the direction the series took.
Villeneuve expressed his frustration with the Ewoks and how Star Wars became too formulaic and predictable for his taste. He admitted that he has no interest in directing a Star Wars film because he feels the franchise has become too rigid and formulaic.
On a different note, Villeneuve mentioned that he is not a fan of Star Trek either. When asked about the possibility of a Dune 3, he remained noncommittal, stating that he may or may not be involved. Villeneuve expressed his preference for working on original, standalone projects rather than getting involved in another franchise.
Additionally, Villeneuve stated that he is not interested in working with streaming services like Netflix. He emphasized the importance of the theatrical experience and the communal aspect of watching a film in a theater. Villeneuve believes that the shared emotional experience of watching a movie together in a theater is irreplaceable and hopes that the traditional theater experience will continue to thrive.
