David Tennant, Robert Carlyle, and Toby Jones are set to star in a new ITV Studios-commissioned series based on the U.K.’s phone-hacking scandal, titled The Hack.
Written by Jack Thorne, known for his work on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and His Dark Materials, the seven-part drama will delve into the events between 2002 and 2012. The storyline follows investigative journalist Nick Davies (played by David Tennant) as he uncovers evidence of phone-hacking within the News of the World tabloid. In parallel, the series explores the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook (played by Robert Carlyle) with Toby Jones portraying former editor-in-chief of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger.
Thorne expressed the complexity of the story, stating, “It’s a fight for the truth that really shocked me.” He underscored the importance of telling this story in a time where truth is at risk, and he aims to do justice to the intricate events and the remarkable journalism involved.
The fallout from the phone-hacking scandal continues to impact prominent figures in the U.K., with recent developments such as Prince Harry settling his case against NGN, the publisher of The Sun newspaper, for privacy violations. Actor Hugh Grant has also called for a new criminal investigation into NGN following the Duke’s settlement, emphasizing that the issue is far from resolved.
The Hack has been commissioned by ITV and will be available for streaming on ITVX and STV Player. The series is currently in post-production after filming in 2024. Stay tuned for its release.
