NewsNation will be searching for a new host for its crucial 9 p.m. hour as Dan Abrams plans to step down from his primetime program early next year. Abrams made the announcement on his show, Dan Abrams Live, stating that he will be leaving the show in February.
Abrams is a prominent figure in the media industry, juggling roles as ABC News chief legal analyst, a host on satellite radio, and the host and producer of On Patrol Live on the Reelz Channel. He also owns a digital media empire that includes Mediaite and Law & Crime Network, in addition to his nightly NewsNation program.
In his statement on Thursday, Abrams mentioned his other commitments and the difficulty of balancing them with his NewsNation show. He expressed his gratitude for the unexpected opportunity but acknowledged that it is no longer feasible to dedicate the necessary time to the program while also managing his businesses.
Despite stepping down as anchor, Abrams will remain with NewsNation, with more details to be revealed in February. NewsNation is expected to announce his successor early next year.
Abrams had signed a new contract with NewsNation just a year ago and played a significant role in shaping the network’s identity under Nexstar’s ownership. When he joined three years ago, Nexstar rebranded the network to NewsNation from WGN America, transitioning it to a 24-hour cable news format earlier this year.
Abrams and NewsNation president Sean Compton shared a vision for providing unbiased news coverage in a cable news landscape filled with partisan outlets. This led to the creation of Abrams’ nightly show on the network.
Recently, NewsNation also renewed Chris Cuomo’s contract, who serves as the lead-in to Abrams’ program.
