Michael Mann, an Oscar nominee, recently provided an update on the highly anticipated Heat 2, teasing fans with details about the progress of the long-awaited sequel to the 1995 crime drama. The original movie starred Al Pacino as Lt. Vincent Hanna and Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley, both delivering acclaimed performances.
In a recent interview, Mann confirmed that he has completed the screenplay for Heat 2 and has submitted the first draft to Warner Bros. Although the studio has not yet given the official green light for the project, the film will be based on Mann’s novel of the same name released in 2022.
“I just finished the screenplay and handed in the first draft to Warner Brothers. Any more than that, I can’t talk about. But it’s an exciting project,” Mann shared.
Development of the sequel began in 2023, with the storyline set to be a combination of both a prequel and a sequel, taking place in 1989 and 2002. While the cast has not been confirmed, there have been rumors of Adam Driver and Austin Butler in talks to portray younger versions of Neil McCauley and Vincent Hanna. Pacino has also mentioned Timothée Chalamet as a potential actor to play his character in the sequel.
The original Heat film also featured Val Kilmer, Natalie Portman, Diane Venora, Tom Sizemore, Hank Azaria, Ashley Judd, and Danny Trejo. It marked the first on-screen collaboration between Pacino and De Niro since their appearance together in The Godfather Part II in 1974.
