Cruel Intentions, the 2024 follow-up to the 1999 movie of the same name, will not be returning for a second season. The series released its first and only installment last November after a long journey to release.
Originally scheduled to debut on Freevee in 2021, the show eventually moved to Prime Video in 2023. Prior to this, NBC had commissioned and then canceled a different pilot inspired by the movie in 2016. Additionally, a prequel series from Fox never made it to air.
Amazon’s Cruel Intentions series featured a talented cast including Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Brooke Lena Johnson. Neal H. Moritz and Roger Kumble, the original film’s producer and writer/director, respectively, also served as executive producers for the series.
The show’s plot revolves around the elite students of Manchester College, a university near Washington, D.C., where reputation is paramount. It follows step-siblings Caroline Merteuil (Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Burgess) as they navigate the cutthroat social hierarchy and are willing to do anything to maintain their power, including seducing Annie Grover (Smith), the Vice President’s daughter.
The original Cruel Intentions movie focused on wealthy high schoolers in New York City and starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair. Based on the classic novel Dangerous Connections by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, the movie gained a cult following.
In conclusion, while Cruel Intentions will not be returning for a second season, fans can still enjoy the lone installment that was released in November.
