At the 7th annual Celebration of Black Cinema and Television hosted by the Critics Choice Association, some of the industry’s biggest stars were honored with awards. Among the recipients were Tyler Perry, Cynthia Erivo, Regina King, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
The event, held at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, saw comedian Jay Pharoah as the host, bringing humor to the evening as the winners reflected on the significance of their awards.
Tyler Perry, who received the Icon Award from Kelly Rowland, used his acceptance speech to reflect on the recent passing of Steve Mensch, the president of Tyler Perry Studios, and the anniversary of his mother’s death. Perry emphasized the importance of spreading love and positivity in a world filled with challenges.
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who received the Social Impact Award, highlighted the ongoing pursuit of Black liberation in the United States and expressed her commitment to telling the stories of overlooked Black heroines.
Other honorees included Regina King, Wendell Pierce, John David Washington, Natasha Rothwell, Steve McQueen, Jharrel Jerome, Kris Bowers, Ryan Destiny, Michael Rainey Jr., Natalie Rae, Angela Batton, and Malcolm D. Lee.
Cynthia Erivo, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award, accepted the actress award and spoke about the importance of representation in storytelling.
Overall, the event celebrated the achievements of Black creatives in the industry and highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusivity in film and television.
