OpenAI has recently introduced a new way for U.S. users to connect with their popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, even without a Wi-Fi connection. This new feature allows users to call 1-800-CHATGPT or 1-800-242-8478 to interact with the AI assistant.
During a live demonstration on Wednesday, OpenAI showcased how users can call the provided phone number and engage in conversations with ChatGPT. Whether using a smartphone, flip phone, or landline, users will be greeted by a female voice identifying as ChatGPT and offering assistance.
In the demonstration, ChatGPT helped users identify landmarks seen on a road trip and provided English-to-Spanish translations for greeting a friend’s grandmother. This move to make ChatGPT accessible via phone calls aligns with OpenAI’s goal of making AI available to as many people as possible.
Each phone call is currently limited to 15 free minutes, with no immediate plans for monetization. Additionally, global users can now interact with ChatGPT by sending messages to the same phone number via WhatsApp, allowing for seamless communication with the AI chatbot.
Both calling and messaging features require no account creation, making it convenient for users to access ChatGPT. The OpenAI team developed this capability within a short timeframe, demonstrating their dedication to making AI technology more accessible.
This new feature is part of OpenAI’s ongoing “12 Days of OpenAI” event, which includes the release of ChatGPT Search for all users and the text-to-video generator Sora to the general public. With these innovations, OpenAI continues to push boundaries in AI technology.
Overall, the new phone call and messaging features for ChatGPT provide users with convenient ways to interact with the AI chatbot, showcasing OpenAI’s commitment to democratizing access to artificial intelligence.
