Conan O’Brien is receiving praise for his Drake joke at the Oscars, where he made a reference to the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. However, O’Brien revealed that he did not write the joke himself. The joke joked about Kendrick Lamar coming out during the Oscars and calling Drake a pedophile, which received a positive reaction from the audience. This joke was actually written by Skyler Higley, a Chicago-based comic who has previously worked with O’Brien.
During his podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” O’Brien shared that he has received positive feedback for the joke, even from a young Black gentleman he met at a store who asked him about the Drake joke. O’Brien also praised his co-writers, Jeff Ross and Mike Sweeney, for their work on the Oscars ceremony.
Higley, who worked with O’Brien on his TBS talk show, has won a WGA award for Best Comedy-Variety Talk Series in 2021. O’Brien also mentioned a gag that didn’t make it to the live show, which involved him in green make-up like Elphaba in “Wicked.”
Overall, O’Brien expressed his delight with how the Oscars ceremony went and mentioned that he had a great time hosting it. Despite the successful Drake joke, there were other gags that didn’t make it to the live show, including an elaborate opening sequence involving various movie references.
