Composer Tyler Bates is facing a lawsuit for allegedly using the voice of singer Azam Ali without her consent in his productions. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims that Bates created a “digital replica” of Ali’s voice and used it on projects such as Cartoon Network’s animated series Primal without compensating the singer.
Azam Ali, known for her work on scores for films like Thor: The Dark World and Fight Club, first collaborated with Bates in 2001 on the soundtrack for Night at the Golden Eagle. Their partnership continued on projects such as Dawn of the Dead and 300.
Last year, Ali discovered that her voice was being used on a soundtrack for a production scored by Bates without her permission. Bates admitted to creating a sample instrument from recordings of her voice, which he distributed to collaborators for their projects.
Ali’s voice allegedly appeared in projects like Primal and Army of Two: The 40th Day. She has filed a lawsuit citing breach of contract and is seeking damages.
Tyler Bates has faced plagiarism accusations in the past, including using music cues without permission for the score of 300. In 2018, he was sued for failing to credit and compensate individuals who worked on Guardians of the Galaxy. The case was later settled.
For Bates, who is known for scoring movies like John Wick and X, this lawsuit adds to his legal troubles. A representative for Bates has not yet commented on the matter.
