Carousell, a homegrown ecommerce platform, has recently made the decision to lay off 76 employees from its business and tech departments across its regional offices, including in Singapore. This move, which represents about 7% of the Group’s total headcount, was announced by Carousell Group CEO Quek Siu Rui in a town hall meeting on December 6.
The layoffs were implemented in order to “match market reality” in certain business units and to reallocate resources to areas that show promising growth potential, according to a statement from the platform. Carousell emphasized that these adjustments were necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability and operational efficiency of the Group.
Both the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and the Creative Media and Publishing Union (CMPU), which represents Carousell’s Singapore workforce, were informed about the retrenchment. A spokesperson for CMPU mentioned that Carousell had explored alternative options, including redeployment to other suitable positions, before proceeding with the layoffs.
