In the past, societal norms have evolved, such as smoking indoors or patting secretaries on the bottom. Now, the trend of working remotely in cafes is losing favor, but I believe it’s a valuable sanctuary for WFH professionals like me. Working at my kitchen table is fine, but the cafe provides a change of scenery that keeps me sane.
As a writer, I appreciate the flexibility to work anywhere, but I understand the concerns of cafe owners about remote workers overstaying their welcome. To maintain a harmonious relationship, I’ve developed a code of conduct for cafe-laptop users. This includes limiting time to four hours, spending at least £5 every two hours, and avoiding loud calls or Zoom meetings.
It’s important to integrate seamlessly into the cafe environment, respect staff, and be grateful for the opportunity to work there. By following these guidelines, we can ensure that cafes remain a productive and welcoming space for all.
Cafes have always been a place to nurture ideas and connect with others, making them a valuable resource for remote workers. Losing access to cafes would limit our options and force us to seek alternative working arrangements. Let’s work together to maintain a positive relationship with cafes and continue to benefit from the unique atmosphere they provide.
