In April 2022, Airbnb introduced a Live and Work Anywhere remote work policy, allowing its global employees to work from any location as long as they attend regular in-person team gatherings. CEO Brian Chesky recently clarified that these gatherings require employees to visit San Francisco for one week a month.
Chesky emphasizes the importance of collaboration during these “gathering weeks” rather than simply increasing productivity. He believes that having employees in the office all the time does not necessarily add value to the company. Most Airbnb employees are based in San Francisco, but the company flies out-of-state or out-of-country employees to the office once a month for meetups.
Approximately 20% of Airbnb employees have relocated within the U.S. or abroad since the introduction of the Live and Work Anywhere policy. Chesky believes that setting rigorous milestones and deadlines is a more effective way to increase productivity than requiring employees to work in the office.
In contrast to companies like JPMorgan and Gap, which have issued return-to-office mandates, Airbnb has embraced remote work and flexibility for its employees. Chesky believes that this approach leads to superior output and employee satisfaction.
