Bowen Yang addresses accusations from comedian Michelle Best about getting Shane Gillis fired from SNL in 2019. Gillis was let go from the show after making offensive remarks on a podcast. Yang, a Saturday Night Live castmember, responded to Best’s comments on Instagram clarifying that he did not have a hand in Gillis’ departure but did write the sketch that Best appeared in as a background actor.
Yang, a writer turned on-air cast member at SNL since 2018, has been part of the show’s creative team. In contrast, Gillis is set to return to SNL as a host with musical guest Tate McRae for an upcoming episode.
Lorne Michaels, the SNL boss, expressed frustration over Gillis’ firing, feeling that the situation was blown out of proportion. Despite his disappointment, Michaels acknowledged that it was NBC’s decision to dismiss Gillis from the show.
