Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated film “Mickey 17” is set to make its international premiere at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival, as reported by Variety. This is a major coup for new Berlinale artistic director Tricia Tuttle, who is curating her first lineup after a successful run at the BFI London Film Festival. There is a possibility that the film’s screening at the Berlinale could also serve as its world premiere if it does not premiere in South Korea first.
The official premiere date for “Mickey 17” has not been announced yet, but the Berlinale takes place from February 13 to 23 this year. This means that the international premiere of the film could take place just days before its release in South Korean theaters on February 28. Warner Bros. has scheduled the US theatrical release of “Mickey 17” for March 7 after several changes to its release date.
Directed by Bong Joon-ho, “Mickey 17” is his first film since the critically acclaimed “Parasite” in 2019. The film is adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey7” and stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an “expendable” employee sent on dangerous missions on an ice planet. The film also features Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
In addition to directing, Bong also produces “Mickey 17” through his production company, Offscreen. The film is co-produced by Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dooho Choi.
While “Mickey 17” will receive attention at the Berlinale, the festival will open with Tom Tykwer’s film “The Light” presented as a Berlinale Special Gala. The full festival lineup will be announced on January 21.
Stay tuned for more updates on “Mickey 17” as it gears up for its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.
