At the 2025 Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards, Sean Baker’s film Anora took home the top prize for best picture. The screwball comedy, which follows a young sex worker’s romantic involvement with a Russian oligarch’s son, also earned Mikey Madison the best female actor award. Madison is also a nominee for the best actress Oscar.
Anora has been sweeping awards season, winning best picture at the Critics Choice Awards and the Producers Guild Awards. The film originally took home the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes.
In Vancouver, Jesse Eisenberg won the best screenplay award for A Real Pain, with Kieran Culkin earning best supporting male actor for the same film. Despite nominations in multiple categories, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist left the event empty-handed.
Denis Villeneuve was recognized as the best director for Dune: Part Two, while Timothée Chalamet won best male actor for his role in A Complete Unknown, a Bob Dylan biopic. Margaret Qualley was awarded best supporting female actor for The Substance, and No Other Land won best feature documentary.
Flow, an animated film directed by Gints Zilbalodis, took home the best international film in a non-English language category. In the Canadian film categories, My Old Ass, a coming-of-age comedy drama by Megan Park, dominated with wins for best picture, best screenplay, and best female actor for Maisy Stella.
Can I Get a Witness? also had a successful night, earning Ann Marie Fleming the best director award, Sandra Oh the best supporting female actor award, and Keira Jang a One to Watch award.
