Disney is facing a lawsuit alleging that they copied the idea for Moana and its sequel from animator Buck Woodall’s screenplay for an animated film called “Bucky.” The lawsuit claims that both works are set in an ancient Polynesian village and follow teenagers on voyages to save their homes while encountering spirit animals.
The lawsuit, filed in California federal court, follows a court ruling that Disney did not have to face a similar copyright lawsuit over Moana, as Woodall sued too late. However, with the release of Moana 2, Woodall was able to initiate further legal action.
U.S. District Judge Consuelo Marshall stated that there is a genuine dispute over the similarity between the two works. Moana 2 has been a box office success, potentially earning an Academy Award nomination for best animated feature.
Woodall claims that he provided Disney with elements necessary for the development of Moana after over 17 years of work on his project “Bucky.” The lawsuit points out several similarities between the two works, including thematic elements and plot points.
Woodall is seeking damages equivalent to 2.5 percent of Moana’s gross revenue, as well as a court order barring further copyright infringement. Disney has denied allegations of similarity and stated that Moana was not based on Woodall’s work.
The screenplay for “Bucky” has been registered with the Writers Guild of America and granted protection by the U.S. Copyright Office. Disney has submitted documents showing the development of Moana to support their argument that the movie was created independently.
