In September, the film industry lost a legendary talent, James Earl Jones, who left a lasting impact on both cinema and those who continue to cherish it. André Holland, a fellow actor, paid tribute to Jones during a visit to the Criterion Closet, reflecting on the influence Jones had on him and many others.
Holland spoke admiringly of Jones, calling him his hero and praising his incredible acting skills. He expressed his sadness over Jones’ passing but acknowledged the legacy he left behind. Holland also shared his experience of starring in “Othello” on stage, a role that Jones had also portrayed multiple times. He found inspiration in Jones’ journals from his performances of the character, gaining a deeper appreciation for his talent and genius.
During his visit to the Criterion Closet, Holland selected films that featured Jones and other iconic actors, such as John Sayles’ “Matewan” and the film adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun,” in honor of Sidney Poitier. Holland expressed his admiration for Hansberry’s work and the impact it had on his career aspirations.
