The Wicked team’s lives have been changed — for good. The Oscars 2025 opened with a stunning performance by Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo). Grande sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” followed by Erivo’s powerful rendition of “Home” from The Wiz. The highlight was when they united to sing “Defying Gravity,” earning a standing ovation from the audience.
The film received 10 nominations and won two awards, with Ervio and Grande both being nominated in their respective categories. Costume designer Paul Tazewell made history as the first Black man to win for best costume design. In his acceptance speech, he thanked the cast and crew for trusting him to bring their characters to life.
Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales also won for best production design. The show had other memorable moments, including Bowen Yang presenting in his full Shiz University uniform and host Conan O’Brien joking about the musical’s storyline.
Erivo teased the sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” on the red carpet, revealing that it will explore the consequences of the characters’ decisions and feature familiar songs. The sequel is set to premiere in November.
