The creators of The Brutalist, a potential Oscar nominee from A24, utilized AI technology to modify actors’ dialogue and generate images for the film’s conclusion, as revealed by the film’s editor Dávid Jancsó in an interview with RedShark News.
The movie follows a fictional Hungarian architect, portrayed by Adrien Brody, who faces challenges in creating art within the American capitalist system. To ensure Brody and his co-star Felicity Jones accurately pronounced Hungarian words, Jancsó mentioned that Respeecher, a company specializing in AI technology, was employed to adjust the actor’s speech.
Respeecher was able to refine the actor’s vocals to match a native Hungarian speaker’s pronunciation. Although Jancsó acknowledged that traditional dialogue editing could achieve similar results, the use of AI was necessary due to the large amount of Hungarian dialogue in the film.
In addition to modifying dialogue, generative AI was also utilized to produce architectural drawings featured in the movie’s conclusion. These decisions were driven by budget constraints, as The Brutalist is a lengthy film with extensive production elements reportedly made for less than $10 million.
While Hollywood unions previously expressed concerns over the potential use of AI to replace human workers, the practice continues to be controversial. However, director Brady Corbet emphasized that the aim was to maintain the authenticity of the actors’ performances, rather than replacing or altering them.
Respeecher has previously been utilized for projects like creating new Darth Vader dialogue for Disney’s Obi-Wan-Kenobi series. As the film industry seeks cost-effective solutions, AI tools are likely to remain a valuable option for saving time and money in movie production.
