Academy Award-winning filmmaker Adam McKay is stepping back into the Oscar race with a new project that is generating significant buzz.
IndieWire is excited to announce that McKay, known for his work on “The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up,” is joining “A Lien,” a film on the Oscar shortlist for Best Live-Action Short, as an executive producer through his production company Hyperobject Industries.
Written and directed by the Cutler-Kreutz brothers, who were recently featured on Vimeo’s list of Breakout Creators of 2024, “A Lien” sheds light on the challenging journey towards permanent residency in the United States, exposing the questionable tactics used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain more individuals.
“A Lien” has received praise for its gripping narrative, with McKay commenting, “This film captures the harsh reality that many face every day.” The filmmaker has been vocal on social media about various social issues, including immigration policies as portrayed in “A Lien.”
In addition to McKay, “A Lien” is produced by Tara Sheffer and Rebecca Eskeris and features a talented cast, including Victoria Ratermanis and William Martinez, who also serve as executive producers.
The film has already seen success on the festival circuit, winning accolades such as the Special Jury Award at Salute Your Shorts 2024 and the Grand Prize Narrative Award at the Washington Film Festival 2024.
The Cutler-Kreutz brothers previously gained recognition for their film “Trapped,” which earned awards at SXSW Film Festival 2024, Palm Springs International ShortFest 2024, and the Philadelphia Film Festival 2024.
McKay’s involvement in “A Lien” follows his executive producer role on the Oscar shortlisted documentary feature “Union.” Alongside his Hyperobject Industries team, McKay has worked on various films and TV series, including “The Menu” and “Fresh,” as well as “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.”
As the Oscar nominations voting period has been extended due to the California wildfires, audiences can now stream “A Lien” on Vimeo Staff Picks to experience this impactful film.
