Apple has introduced a new Mac Studio, a high-performance desktop computer designed for professionals, along with a new M4-powered MacBook Air. The Mac Studio offers users the choice between the M4 Max and the M3 Ultra, showcasing the company’s commitment to providing top-of-the-line performance options.
The Mac Studio is priced at $1,999 and is available for pre-order starting today, with availability in the Apple Store from Wednesday, March 12. Despite its version number, the M3 Ultra is the latest addition to Apple’s M-series lineup of chips, boasting more power than the M4 Max and the Pro version.
The M3 Ultra is based on the M3 architecture and achieves superior performance by utilizing two M3 Max dies through Apple’s UltraFusion architecture. Compared to the M2 Ultra, the M3 Ultra delivers up to 2x better performance, making it Apple’s highest-performing chip yet. With a 32-core CPU, 24 performance cores, eight efficiency cores, and up to 80 graphics cores, the M3 Ultra packs an impressive 184 billion transistors.
The M4 Max, on the other hand, features a 14-core CPU with 10 performance cores, four efficiency cores, and a 32-core GPU. Despite being based on a more recent architecture, the M3 Ultra outperforms the M4 Max in terms of performance.
Starting at $1,999, the M4 Max comes with 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage. The M3 Ultra version starts at $3,999 and includes 96GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage. Users can customize their configurations by adding more memory and storage options before making a purchase.
The Mac Studio features a familiar design with most ports located at the back of the computer, including four Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, and a 10GB Ethernet port. Additionally, it includes a 3.5mm headphone jack and an easily accessible power button at the back. On the front, there is an SD slot and two USB-C ports, which are Thunderbolt 5 ports for the M3 Ultra version.
With the M3 Ultra-equipped Mac Studio, users can connect up to eight 6K displays or four 8K displays, making it a versatile choice for professionals seeking maximum screen display capabilities. Whether you choose the M4 Max or the M3 Ultra, the Mac Studio offers a range of customization options to meet your performance needs.
