The Room Next Door was not the only Sigrid Nunez adaptation to debut at fall festivals last year. Montana Story, directed by David Siegel and Scott McGehee, follows The Friend, starring Naomi Watts as a woman in NYC who takes care of her late friend’s dog, played by Bill Murray. The film, which premiered at Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF, has been acquired by Bleecker Street and will be released in NYC on March 28, with a wide release on April 4.
The synopsis of the film is as follows: “In THE FRIEND, Iris (Naomi Watts) has her comfortable New York life disrupted when she inherits her late friend Walter’s (Bill Murray) Great Dane, Apollo. As Iris bonds with Apollo, she begins to come to terms with her past, her lost friend, and her own creative inner life.”
Michael Frank praised the film in his NYFF review, describing it as a touching exploration of grief, suicide, and depression through the story of a woman who inherits a dog despite her dislike for them. The film, adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel, is both light-hearted and emotionally resonant.
