Pharrell Williams Cancels Musical Biopic “Golden” Directed by Michel Gondry
Pharrell Williams has made the difficult decision to cancel the release of his upcoming musical biopic, “Golden,” as reported by Variety. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Michel Gondry, the film was initially scheduled for release on May 5. However, due to creative differences, Williams and Gondry have decided not to move forward with the project.
In a joint statement, Williams and Gondry explained that they were unable to find a suitable direction to tell the story they had originally envisioned. Despite the setback, they expressed gratitude to the cast and crew for their hard work and commitment to the project. They also expressed optimism about future collaborations with Universal, the studio backing the film.
“Golden” had already been filmed and featured an impressive cast of musicians and actors, including Halle Bailey, Missy Elliott, Janelle Monáe, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Anderson .Paak, and Quinta Brunson. The movie was intended to be a coming-of-age story focused on Williams’ early years in Virginia Beach during the 1970s, with a theme centered on celebrating Black life, culture, and joy.
Universal Pictures, which was set to distribute “Golden,” is expected to incur approximately $20 million in production costs. Last year, Universal’s affiliate, Focus Features, released “Piece by Piece,” a unique documentary-style film about Pharrell Williams that used Lego minifigures to depict key moments in the musician’s life.
Despite the cancellation of “Golden,” fans can still look forward to future projects from Pharrell Williams and his collaborations with Universal.
