Post-Production of Universal Musical ‘Golden’ Scrapped by Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry

Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry have decided to cancel their movie musical “Golden” during post-production at Universal Pictures, as reported by TheWrap. The film, helmed by the acclaimed director Gondry of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” will not see the light of day due to the team’s realization that it did not align with their original vision.

In a joint statement to Variety, Williams and Gondry expressed their disappointment in not being able to deliver the film. They acknowledged the hard work of the cast and crew and emphasized their commitment to collaborating with Universal in a different capacity in the future.

“Golden” boasted a star-studded ensemble cast including Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, and Missy Elliott.

Initially titled “Atlantis,” the musical was set in Virginia Beach in 1977 and was described by Williams as a coming-of-age story celebrating Black life, culture, and joy. The film was to feature music from the songwriting duo Pasek and Paul in collaboration with Williams.

On a separate note, Williams currently holds the position of men’s creative director at Louis Vuitton. He recently composed music for Tyler Perry’s movie “The Six Triple Eight” on Netflix. Gondry, known for his work on “The Science of Sleep” and “Kidding,” is gearing up to showcase his animated feature “Maya, Give Me A Title” at the Berlin Film Festival, exploring his relationship with his daughter.

Despite reaching out to Universal for comment, TheWrap did not receive a response.
