Issa Rae discusses continued backlash from fans over the ending of Insecure, the popular series that concluded its fifth season in December 2021. Despite the Emmy-winning show’s success in portraying the everyday experiences of modern Black women, some viewers remain unhappy with how the story wrapped up.
The finale saw Issa Dee, played by Rae, rekindling her romance with Lawrence Walker, portrayed by Jay Ellis. However, this reunion was met with mixed reactions, especially since Lawrence had a complicated history with another character, Condola Hayes, played by Christina Elmore. The tension surrounding Issa and Lawrence’s relationship, coupled with Lawrence’s fatherhood reveal, left some fans disappointed.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Issa Rae shared that fans have expressed their displeasure with the series’ finale even years later. Some have gone as far as demanding a reshoot of the ending, criticizing Issa’s decision in the final moments of the show.
Despite the ongoing criticism, Rae remains lighthearted about the feedback, joking about a hacking incident on her social media accounts where a hacker demanded three more seasons of Insecure in exchange for help accessing her account.
Insecure also featured a talented ensemble cast including Yvonne Orji, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales, and Kendrick Sampson.
