Following the recent departure of Josh Goldstine as the president of Warner Bros. Pictures marketing, there have been changes in the promotion of Bong Joon Ho’s highly anticipated new film, “Mickey 17.” While there has been no official confirmation from the Berlinale, reports suggest that the movie will have its European premiere at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival. Starring top actors like Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, and Naomi Ackie, “Mickey 17” is an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7.”
Production of the film began in August 2022, and it was completed by Joon Ho in November 2023. However, Warner Bros. requested changes and initially scheduled the release for January 31, 2025, before ultimately settling on March 7. This decision raised eyebrows among fans, considering Joon Ho’s successful track record, including winning three Oscars for his film “Parasite.”
There seems to have been a disconnect at Warner Bros. regarding the marketing strategy for “Mickey 17.” While the South Korean trailer presents a more serious tone, the U.S. marketing leans towards portraying the film as a comedy. This marks Joon Ho’s second English-language film after “Okja,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 before streaming on Netflix.
