Mufasa vs. Sonic 3: A Close Battle at the Christmas Box Office
It’s a nail-biter at the box office this Christmas as Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 go head-to-head for the top spot. The long five-day holiday weekend is expected to see Mufasa leading with $61 million, closely followed by Sonic 3 with an estimated $59 million. However, Sonic 3 might take the three-day weekend with $37.5 million compared to Mufasa’s $34-35 million.
Both movies opened last weekend, with Sonic 3 impressing audiences and surpassing the $100 million mark domestically. Mufasa also saw an uptick in ticket sales as more families went to see it, but still trails behind Sonic with a domestic total of $88.4 million.
But these two films aren’t the only ones making waves this holiday season. Robert Eggers and Focus Features’ Nosferatu, a star-studded vampire pic, is expected to have a strong five-day opening of $39-40 million. Timothée Chalamet’s A Complete Unknown and A24’s Babygirl are also exceeding expectations and gaining positive audience reception.
In addition, Amazon MGM Studios’ A Fire Inside, directed by Mufasa’s Barry Jenkins, is projected to have a $4.2 million five-day opening. Overall, the box office has seen a boost in year-end sales, narrowing the year-over-year deficit from 11% to 4%.
As we wrap up the year, it’s clear that moviegoers are in for a treat with a variety of exciting films to choose from this holiday season. Whether you’re rooting for Mufasa, Sonic, or one of the other standout films hitting theaters, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at the box office.
