IndieWire After Dark is back with a celebration of fringe cinema in the streaming age every Friday night. In December 2024, we’re diving into the world of Strange Holiday TV Specials and Seasonal Midnight Movies.
This month, our feature pick is “Trancers,” a blend of “Blade Runner” meets “Die Hard” meets Ancestry.com. In this hyper-stylish sci-fi pursuit, Trooper Jack Deth travels back in time to the 1980s to hunt down his arch-nemesis, Martin Whistler.
Whistler, now known as Detective Weisling, is a psychic killer who turns his victims into zombies known as “trancers.” With a plan to assassinate future government officials by killing their relatives in the past, it’s up to Jack Deth to stop him.
Set during the Christmas season in Reagan-era Los Angeles, “Trancers” features a unique blend of action and holiday spirit. While not overtly a Christmas film, it captures the essence of the holidays in a fun and entertaining way.
Director Charles Band’s “Trancers” may have its imperfections, but it’s a hidden gem worth watching. With its ’80s sci-fi vibe and memorable one-liners, it’s a seasonal cinematic treat that is perfect for the holidays.
Watch “Trancers” (1984) now streaming for free on Tubi and join us every Friday night for more midnight movie recommendations from IndieWire After Dark.
