The film, set in post-Holocaust America, follows the journey of László Tóth, a Jewish Hungarian architect played by Brody. Despite initially losing the role to other actors, including Joel Edgerton, Mark Rylance, and Marion Cotillard, Brody eventually landed the part when production resumed in 2023. Filming took place in Hungary with a talented cast that includes Felicity Jones, Alessandro Nivola, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, and Isaach De Bankolé.
Brody, whose own family history connects him to the themes of the film, expressed his personal connection to the material. His mother, Sylvia Plachy, and grandparents fled the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and settled in New York. Drawing from his own experiences, including his Oscar-winning performance in The Pianist, Brody discussed his approach to challenging roles in his career.
Despite the challenges of the industry, Brody remains dedicated to his craft and finds fulfillment in emotionally demanding roles. His work in The Brutalist has already garnered critical acclaim, with nominations from the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Association.
