The 2025 Academy Awards music categories shortlist has been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Potential nominees for Best Original Score include Daniel Blumberg, Bryce Dessner, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Hans Zimmer. Reznor and Ross are also nominees for Best Original Song, along with Maren Morris, Pharrell Williams, and more.
In the Best Original Score category, Reznor and Ross (Challengers), Blumberg (The Brutalist), Dessner (Sing Sing), Elfman (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), Zimmer (Blitz), Bertelmann (Conclave), and others are on the shortlist. Morris and her co-writers are vying for a nomination with the song “Kiss the Sky” from The Wild Robot, while Williams made the shortlist with the title track of his movie Piece by Piece. Emilia Pérez has multiple songs on the shortlist, including “El Mal” and “Mi Camino.”
The Academy also released the shortlist for Best Documentary Feature Film, which includes director Gary Hustwit’s documentary Eno.
There is overlap between the nominees for the 2025 Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards shortlists. Almost all nominees for Best Original Score are on both lists, with the exception of Dune: Part Two. Hans Zimmer scored the film and is being considered for Blitz at the Oscars. Only one Golden Globe nominee for Best Original Song, “Beautiful That Way” by Miley Cyrus, Lykke Li, and Andrew Wyatt, is not on the Academy Awards shortlist.
The 2025 Academy Awards will take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Conan O’Brien hosting. The shortlists for Best Original Score and Best Original Song include a diverse range of talented artists and composers.
