Red One, the holiday action comedy featuring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, has set a new record as Amazon MGM’s biggest opening on Prime Video. According to the company, over 50 million viewers worldwide watched the movie in the first four days of its release on the streaming service, surpassing the previous record held by Road House.
Amazon did not provide details on how the viewer count for Red One was calculated, but compared to Netflix and Disney+, they typically divide the total runtime of a film by the number of viewers to determine viewership numbers.
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, expressed gratitude for the successful partnership with filmmakers in finding the right strategy to reach a wide audience with Red One. The film had a theatrical release in over 3,000 screens in North America and 3,300 screens internationally, resulting in a box office revenue exceeding $175 million.
In Red One, Johnson plays the role of the North Pole’s security head who teams up with a hacker (Evans) from the “naughty list” to rescue Santa Claus and save Christmas. The movie’s success is attributed to a well-executed marketing campaign that generated awareness and attracted viewers to Prime Video.
