Jack Lilley, a renowned stunt performer and actor known for his work on Little House on the Prairie, has passed away at the age of 91. Lilley, who appeared in all nine seasons of the beloved NBC drama, died at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills after battling Alzheimer’s disease, according to his granddaughter Savanah Lilley.
In addition to his work on Little House on the Prairie, Lilley also had a memorable role in the classic film Blazing Saddles, where he played one of the outlaws. Director Mel Brooks was so impressed with Lilley’s performance that he kept an accidental scene in the movie where Lilley and his horse slide into a pool of mud and are submerged.
Lilley’s career in the entertainment industry spanned several decades, with notable roles on shows like Bonanza and Father Murphy. He also worked as a stunt coordinator on various projects and appeared in numerous films alongside Hollywood legends like Clint Eastwood.
Born in Texas in 1933, Lilley’s passion for the industry started at a young age, and he began working as a horseback extra in his teens. His impressive resume includes appearances in iconic films such as Cat Ballou, Three Amigos!, and Planet of the Apes.
Lilley’s talent as a stuntman and animal trainer earned him the respect of his peers, with actors like Melissa Gilbert and Billy Crystal praising his dedication and skill. Despite his long and successful career, Lilley remained humble, citing a broken nose as his most serious injury in 50 years of stunt work.
Survived by his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Lilley’s legacy in the entertainment industry will live on through his memorable performances and contributions to film and television. His wife Irene, whom he married in 1957, passed away earlier this year at the age of 95.
