The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade faced disruptions on Thursday due to a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators. New York City police arrested 21 individuals who briefly halted the annual event in Manhattan.
According to various news reports, the protesters breached barricades at Fifth Avenue and West 55th Street around 9:30 a.m., obstructing a Ronald McDonald balloon. Carrying Palestinian flags and banners, the group sat on the parade route and chanted, “Free, free Palestine!” One banner displayed the message, “Don’t celebrate genocide! Arms embargo now.”
Videos circulating online captured spectators expressing discontent at the interruption, some chanting, “USA! USA! USA!” While others booed the protestors and cheered as the police removed them. The parade experienced a delay of approximately five minutes, with charges pending against the demonstrators, as reported by WABC.
This incident marks the second consecutive year that protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza disrupted the parade. In the previous year, 34 pro-Palestinian activists were detained. Notably, both instances involved the blockage of the Ronald McDonald balloon. Speculations suggest that McDonald’s may have been targeted due to perceived support for Israel, resulting in a boycott and the company repurchasing its Israeli restaurants following a decline in sales.
